The Pohanka Automotive Group is one of the nations oldest family owned dealership groups. Frank S. Pohanka established the first Pohanka dealership in 1919, selling and servicing Chevrolets at Ward Place, N.W., in downtown Washington D.C. He quickly established a reputation for providing quality service, utilizing the knowledge he had acquired as a master mechanic and service consultant with the General motors Corporations, and for Thirty years called his company Pohanka Service to emphasize that fact.
As the business grew, Pohanka moved to larger facilities, first, in 1921 to 21st street N.W., and then, in 1923 to the location at 1126 20th street, N.W. when the franchise was switched to Oldsmobile. Through the great depression which saw many business fail, and World War II, when many auto dealers closed due to the fact no cars were being produced, the company grew and prospered, because clients appreciated the quality and friendliness of Pohanka Service.
After the death of Frank Pohanka in 1959, his son and successor, John J. Pohanka relocated the dealership to Marlow Heights, Maryland in 1967. John Served as President of the Automotive Trade Association National Capital Area in 1967-68, and while active with the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), was a founder of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), an organization that certifies technicians. ASE is now the standard by which Technicians are measured. In 1976 John Pohanka was elected as the President of NADA.

The Pohanka Automotive Group remains a family business, with John J. Pohanka, Frank S. Pohanka III, Geoffrey Pohanka, Christopher Pohanka, Timothy Pohanka, and Janis Pohanka carrying on the family tradition of quality service to its clients.
