Honda CR-V History and Evolution in Capitol Heights, MD
Since it first rolled off the production lines in 1995, the Honda CR-V has been a pillar of the manufacturer’s lineup. The acronym stands for Comfortable Runabout Vehicle, because it’s designed to serve as a practical, dependable, and engaging compact SUV. The Early Years
The first-generation CR-V made its debut in October 1995, exclusively in Japan. It didn’t arrive stateside until 1997, where its sporty 2.0L 4-cylinder engine and AWD capability made it a popular choice for drivers looking for a fun vehicle with extra room for growing families. At first, only one trim level was offered, but as its popularity grew, Honda expanded the CR-V lineup and tuned its engine to deliver a bit of extra horsepower. The second-generation model started appearing in dealerships in 2002. It added even more power and eventually incorporated a 5-speed automatic transmission to bolster its driving dynamics. It even included a fold-out picnic table that drivers could use while tailgating at FedExField, now known as Northwest Stadium.
The Middle Years
In 2007, the third-generation Honda CR-V was released. Much of its chassis, drivetrain, and suspension were carried over, but received a major facelift that saw it depart from the model’s blockier look for a rounded, sportier appearance. One of the biggest changes was that it swapped its traditional side-opening rear door for a liftgate and moved the spare tire inside, beneath the cargo area. Its tech features started to see major updates as well, with on-board navigation, a six-disc CD changer, and the ability to play MP3 files all on offer. When Honda introduced the fourth-generation model in 2012, it showcased a potent 2.4L 4-cylinder engine under the hood, introduced Real Time AWD, and made the 5-speed automatic transmission standard equipment. An overhauled suspension system arrived in 2015, bringing more responsive handling and a comfortable ride that made it a common sight on I-495.
Moving to the Present
The CR-V entered the hybrid era during its fifth generation, adding a powertrain consisting of two electric motors and a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine to go along with the gas-only 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder option. While it also received a major exterior overhaul, one of the changes that made the SUV even more of a family-favorite was that driver-assist and safety features, such as Adaptive Cruise Control1, became standard. The sixth and current generation arrived in our showroom for the 2023 model year. It features a mature design that strikes a balance between the rugged early years and the sportier middle ones.
