To many people, the Honda Odyssey is the ultimate minivan: combining reliability, fuel efficiency, remarkable handling, and satisfactory aesthetics. The 2018 model year marks the debut of the minivan’s fifth generation of production. It also marks the debut of a 10-speed automatic transmission for the Touring and Elite trims, which makes the Odyssey the first Honda minivan to get one. For this model year, the trims are the LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite.
Performance
The power plant on the 2018 Honda Odyssey is a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. On the LX, EX, and EX-L trims, Honda pairs the engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It’s the aforementioned 10-speed automatic gearbox that goes on the upper-level Touring and Elite trims. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters provide manual gear-shifting simulation, and an Eco Assist system shuts down non-essential functions to conserve energy and consequently boost fuel economy. On the Touring and Elite, Honda adds engine start-stop technology, which further improves fuel efficiency by turning off the engine when at a complete stop and turning it back on when you ease off the brake pedal.
Interior
The 2018 Honda Odyssey is designed as a three-row vehicle. However, on the base-level LX, there are two captain’s seats at the second row, which keeps maximum occupancy at seven people. The other trims have a second-row bench-style seat, which expands maximum occupancy to eight. The front row includes an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. On the EX, the driver’s seat is upgraded to 12-way power adjustability and 4-way power lumbar support, and both front seats get heating capability. On the EX-L, the first and second rows get leather seat trim, and a two-position memory system appears for the driver’s seat. Front-seat cooling capability is exclusive to the Touring and Elite.
Features
Base-level comfort and convenience features on the 2018 Honda Odyssey include cruise control, push-button engine start, Bluetooth connectivity, a multi-angle rearview camera, and a seven-speaker 160-watt audio system that includes a 5-inch color LCD screen. Features like HD Radio, an 8-inch high-resolution screen, tri-zone automatic climate control, a complimentary SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone-based control appear on the EX. On the EX-L, Honda adds auto dimming ability on the rearview mirror. Upgrade to the Touring, and you’d also get a navigation system, mobile hotspot capability, a built-in vacuum cleaner, a CabinWatch rear-seat camera with remote control, a rear Blu-Ray entertainment system with a 10.2-inch high-resolution widescreen display, and a complimentary subscription to HondaLink for integrating infotainment functions. Exclusive to the Elite trim are wireless charging capability and an 11-speaker 550-watt stereo system.
Safety
To prevent injury, the 2018 Odyssey comes with dual front airbags, dual front-seat mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, and a pair of side curtain airbags. Also on the minivan are vehicle stability control, traction control, all-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and hill start assist control. Go above the LX trim, and you’d also get collision mitigation braking, forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking, lane departure warning, a blind spot monitoring system that includes a cross traffic monitor, and road departure mitigation.
