The 2018 Honda Accord has been revealed. How is it different than the 2017 Honda Civic, its smaller sibling? Remarkably there are as many similarities as differences. Choosing between them won’t force you to sacrifice quality or safety. Yet the Accord definitely is moving ahead when it comes to style and technology.

Performance

The 2018 Honda Accord will offer three powertrains. A new turbo replaces the previous four-cylinder. It cranks horsepower up from 185 to 196. The torque rate climbs, too. A 2.5-liter turbo replaces the thirstier V6. Paired with a ten-speed automatic or a manual, if you like to be in charge, it cranks out 252 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. It also uses less gas than the V6 it replaces.

Civics have a 158-horsepower engine. Like the base edition of the Accord, it is offered with a manual or a continuously variable transmission. A turbo edition cranks out 174 horsepower and 167 lb.-ft. of torque. Your choices continue with the Civic Si with 205 horsepower or the racy Civic Type R with 306 horses under the hood. Both of these are paired with a manual.

Appearance

The 2018 Accords have changed the game for the Honda brand. Critics are comparing the handsome look to luxury-level Acuras. The weight has dropped. This means that although Accords weigh more than Civics, the difference has shrunk slightly. Also, the Accord is slightly shorter while the interior retains its class-leading backseat space. Color schemes let you decorate the interior in your choice of conservative or distinctive hues. Luxury-level amenities have been added to the top trim, pushing it way past the highest level Civic.

While the Accord comes only in a sedan, Civics are available as sedans, coupes and hatchbacks. It is definitely smaller than the Accord, but engineers have squeezed out every inch of usable space to please the front and backseat passengers. Standards are similar to those on the base Accord. You get automatic climate controls and split 60/40 rear seatbacks. The audio screen lets you stream music via smartphone integration.

Safety

Many shoppers are surprised to learn that the Civic offers many HondaSensing technologies. The big difference now is that these are standard safety features on the 2018 Accord. An autobrake is part of its forward collision warning system. Lane departure technology is paired with a lane assist to correct the car’s trajectory. Road departure mitigation, a Honda exclusive, acts in a similar manner if the car wanders onto the shoulder.
