The 2018 Honda Civic is and has been on of the most popular cars on the road, and it’s ready to prove itself once again against another impressive sedan in its own regards - the 2018 Ford Focus. Although both vehicles are thoroughly enjoyed by drivers of all backgrounds, the Civic proves to be the superior of the two. Here’s why.

Performance

Horsepower is neck-and-neck between the Civic (158 horsepower) and the Focus (160 horsepower). However fuel economy is much further apart. Powered by the efficient I-4 engine,  the Civic allows its drivers to get 28 mpg city and 40 mpg* on the highway, while this particular Focus earns 25/38 mpg. For the Focus to match the Civic’s fuel economy, shoppers must opt for the 123-horsepower three-cylinder engine. Both vehicles offer a standard manual transmission. With the Civic, you get an advanced continuously variable transmission in lieu of the six-speed automatic you’ll find on the Focus.

Dimensions

When it comes to size, the Civic has the numbers on its side. The body is three inches longer and the wheelbase is two inches longer than the Focus. Knowing these differences, it isn’t too much of a surprise that the Civic’s passenger volume is so much bigger than the Focus. The Honda is rated at 97 cubic feet while the Focus trails with 90 cubes. In another comparison of basic dimensions, the Civic’s second-row leg room is a remarkable 37.4 inches. That’s four inches more than the Focus (33.2 inches). You can pack a lot more into the Civic. Its trunk measures 15.1 cubic feet while the Focus is rated at 13.2 cubic feet. If you choose the Civic hatchback you have the same passenger advantages. Furthermore, the hold measures 25 cubic feet whereas the Focus hold can handle only 23 cubic feet. Maintaining the Civic Hatchback’s edge, the difference continues when the seats are folded.

Vehicle Technology

Honda has offered standard dash tech for many years. On the Civic, this includes a five-inch display screen, a USB port, Bluetooth streaming audio, and a rearview camera. Most models come with a larger touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Focus comes with a small 4.2-inch display and similar features. However, you have to move all the way to the SEL to get Ford’s larger touchscreen. Another way Honda offers more and charges less, Honda Sensing is available on all automatic models for only $1,000.** You will find these features are limited to higher models at a higher price on the Focus. Honda Sensing includes collision mitigation braking with a forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control. A lane departure warning is complemented by a lane keep assist. Honda’s exclusive road departure mitigation rounds out the package. This smart system can reduce speed and make other adjustments to help the driver keep the Civic on the road.
