The 2018 Honda Pilot has many rivals, even the 2018 Toyota 4Runner. The two-row SUV offers a three-row version. If you compare the Pilot and 4Runner, you'll quickly see which one covers a family's needs better.

Performance

The Pilot has a V6 engine that produces 280 horsepower. It is rivaled by the 4Runner which has 270-horsepower V6. Even though it has more power, the Pilot has better gas mileage. It earns 2 mpg more in city driving and 6 mpg more on the highway. Furthermore, the Pilot is easier to handle. This is due to its carlike front-wheel drive. The 4Runner comes with standard rear-wheel drive.

Spaciousness and Comfort

The 4Runner seats five, but it does offer a third row to stretch seating to seven. The Pilot seats up to eight in 152 cu.ft. of passenger space. It is more hospitable at every seating position. After all, kids may be sitting but they are bound to wiggle. Even without the third row, 4Runner second-row legroom measures only 32.9 inches while the Pilot has a generous 38.4 inches for long legs. Second-row shoulder, hip, and head room are better on the Pilot’s second row. If you only want seven seats, the Pilot Elite has center-row heated captain’s chairs. When it comes to carseats, the Pilot has more space. It has full LATCH attachments for the second row and an extra one on the passenger-side third row.

You’ll notice nicely padded touch points on the Pilot's dash, center console and door panels. The Pilot is also especially quiet while on the road, making passengers more comfortable than in the 4Runner. U.S. News and World Report writes that a lack of creature comforts are a major shortcoming for the Toyota SUV. For instance, LATCH attachments are hard to use, and the 4Runner seats have short bottoms with less padding than is needed.

Safety

While the 4Runner has only a rearview camera, the Pilot offers to add a rear cross-traffic alert and a blind spot monitor. Important Pilot options include a forward collision watch, a related autobrake, and a lane keeper. There’s even a road departure system to help direct the Pilot back to safety.
