Having a redesigned platform that's more elegant, efficient and powerful than previous generations, the 2019 Honda Accord enters the market with plenty of swagger. This mid-size sedan is available with a hybrid system that delivers class-leading fuel economy. Having a comparable body, the 2019 Nissan Altima is a sporty sedan with cutting-edge technology under the hood, like the VC Turbo engine block. The standard Honda Sensing package gives the Accord a clear victory over the Altima in active safety.

Efficiency

The 2019 Accord is available with a hybrid powertrain that includes a 1933 cc gasoline engine. An electric motor is paired with this four-cylinder engine that includes the i-VTEC valvetrain. Energy is also supplied by a conventional lithium-ion battery pack. The hybrid system yields a net output of 212 horsepower at 6,200 RPM. When equipped with the Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission, the Accord gets a fuel economy of 48 MPG on the highway*. Deceleration selectors and the Sport Mode are included in the all-new E-CVT system. By contrast, the 2019 Nissan Altima has a maximum fuel economy of 39 MPG on the highway. Such a rating is quite impressive for a 2.5 L engine, but the Accord's hybrid system is hard to beat. This Honda also has the Eco Assist that optimizes the combustion cycle.

Handling

Standard in the 2019 Accord Sport, the manual transmission system offers six gear ratios for a classic driving experience. Several trims are equipped with an updated continuously variable transmission, which is enhanced by the Sport Mode. Having 10 preset gear speeds, the automatic transmission system operates on a shift-by-wire mechanism. You can use paddle shifters for this transmission and the CVT system. You won't find an automatic or manual transmission under the hood of the 2019 Nissan Altima. Instead, this model runs on the Xtronic CVT that has a wide range of gears. Nevertheless, Nissan deserves some praise for introducing the Intelligent All-Wheel Drive for this model. Traditionally available in the company's crossover SUVs, this AWD maximizes traction on wet roads. The Accord rolls on a standard FWD, but the Traction Control boosts handling in hazardous situations. You can also rely on the Brake Assist for some braking leverage when the wheels slip or skid.

Active Safety

The 2019 Accord has best-in-class standard safety features, which are powered by the Honda Sensing suite. From automatic braking to automatic high-beam headlights, this mid-size sedan offers amazing value in the accident-prevention category. Some of the all-new driving aides include the Traffic Sign Recognition and Cross Traffic Monitor. Lane-centering overrides and lane-changing alerts are also included in the Honda Sensing package. Additionally, the Blind Spot Information System is installed in the Sport and above trims. Some of the 2019 Nissan Altima models are equipped with the ProPILOT Assist technology. A rear sonar system and the Rear Automatic Braking are some other notable active safety amenities in the Altima.
