When the rear payload space of an SUV is too restrictive, the consumer pickup is ready with an open bed for more stuff while still supplying a comfortable cabin for five. The Honda Ridgeline and Chevrolet Colorado plan on grabbing a big share of this market for 2019, but one is bound to be more successful at it. Let’s see which one that is.

Performance

Even though the Chevy Colorado offers three engine choices, the Honda Ridgeline combines the best features of each selection in a single package. The lightest Colorado offering, a 2.5-liter inline-4, manages to match the Ridgeline in mileage with 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway while the 3.5-liter V6 in the Ridgeline achieves 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway*. The problem is that this comes at the cost of only 200 horsepower while the Ridgeline reaches 280 horses. A 2.8-liter turbodiesel-4 alternative produces better torque and mileage, but it only gets 181 horsepower. The biggest Colorado option, a 3.6-liter V6, boosts power up to 308 horses. This isn’t wildly better than the Ridgeline, but it sacrifices mileage at 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

Safety

The 2019 Honda Ridgeline and Chevy Colorado offer many differences in terms of safety features. You can drive with confidence with the Ridgeline's many safety features such as anti-lock braking system, brake assist, multi-angle rearview camera, and seat belt reminder. The Colorado offers features such as rear vision camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and six airbags.

Interior Comfort

The 2019 Ridgeline makes sure there’s plenty of space for second-row commuters with 38.8 inches of headroom and 36.7 inches of legroom while the Colorado’s largest Crew Cab configuration confines rear occupants to 38.3 inches of headroom and 35.8 inches of legroom. Going further, the Ridgeline offers shoulders 62 inches in front and 61.5 inches in back while the Colorado only gives 57.5 inches in front and 56.2 inches in back. For hips, the Ridgeline provides 59.1 inches ahead and 56.6 inches behind while the Colorado is limited to 55 inches in front and 53.3 inches in back. The Ridgeline builds on this by relying on sedan-like unibody construction for better handling of sharp turns. It also takes the unusual, for a pickup, approach of front-wheel drive that puts the engine’s weight directly over the drive wheels for exceptional traction.

The 2019 Honda Ridgeline shows itself as a perfect fit for this increasingly popular category of pickup truck. To see how it can perfectly fit your needs, test one out at our dealership today.
