Midsize pickup trucks attract a specific market in the automotive industry. And among the many available options, there are some interesting elements that bring the Honda Ridgeline to the top of its class. Honda redesigned its pickup not so long ago, which involved employing a unibody construction instead of the body-on-frame solution that its competitors are so heavily into. A comparison of the new 2019 Honda Ridgeline vs 2019 Toyota Tacoma will show how the former edges out the latter.
The Ridgeline’s 3.5 SOHC V6 engine produces 280 horsepower and 262 lbs-ft of torque. The Tacoma’s standard 2.7 DOHC 4-cylinder engine, meanwhile, produces 159 horsepower and 180 lbs-ft of torque. The Tacoma has an optional 3.5 DOHC V6 engine that produces 278 horsepower. The Ridgeline's engine has a single overhead cam that marks its simplicity. The Tacoma has two overhead cams, only adding the number of moving parts and the cylinder heads’ complexity. As for reliability, the basis for this factor is measured according to how a car saves its owner money, time, and trouble. After all, not one driver wants to be stranded or go without a vehicle when it’s scheduled for repair. That said, Consumer Reports says that the Honda Ridgeline is a more reliable car, exceeding the Tacoma by 16 points in its rating system.
Suspension and Handling
The Honda Ridgeline has front and rear suspensions that are fully independent for superior handling and ride. These features allow the wheels of the Ridgeline to follow the road using the best angle for gripping the pavement, without affecting the quality of comfort and ride. The Toyota Tacoma has a non-independent rear suspension and a solid rear axle.
For a better ride, the Ridgeline uses coil springs, which means it has better control and handling than the Tacoma, whose rear uses leaf springs. Coils springs are able to compress better and offers a lot of suspension travel so your rides become smoother with less bottoming out.
In terms of stability and handling, the Ridgeline’s average track is 2.5 inches wider in the rear and 2.8 inches wider in the front than the Tacoma’s average track.
The Ridgeline’s smart airbags deploy in different levels of force or don’t deploy at all if it protects the passengers in the event of a collision. This is made possible using Honda’s seat and speed sensors. As for its side airbags, it won’t activate if it detects a child leaning against the door. The Tacoma’s airbags lack smart sensors and have one level of deployment force. Both the Ridgeline and the Tacoma have rear cross-path warning, blind spot warning systems, lane departure warning systems, available crash mitigating brakes, rearview cameras, daytime running lights, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, traction control, four-wheel antilock brakes, plastic fuel tanks, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, front seatbelt pretensioners, side-impact head airbags, front side-impact airbags, and passenger frontal airbags. These features come standard.
Both the 2019 Honda Ridgeline and 2019 Toyota Tacoma are impressive trucks, but the Ridgeline definitely trumps the Tacoma in many levels. Visit our showroom today to test drive the Ridgeline and our team will help you out with all your needs.
